HAUNTED - September 12th, 1980

By Sarah Das Gupta

Driving one sunny day
my daughter beside me,
along a stretch of road,
grey, dusty to the horizon.
We suddenly see
a tall figure walking
through a field of stubble,
pink in the early sun.
Odd dress- black jacket,
an exotic figure among
the short, stubby corn stalks.
His top hat strange,
yet completely appropriate;
buttonhole a red rose?
No, a wound with blood spouting!
The figure begins singing?
No, he’s silently, piercingly screaming!
Thick, sticky gouts of blood
dribbling, drabbling from his stomach.
Holding his life in his hands,
keeping his stomach in place.
Vanishing into woodland,
sunlight highlights his
scarlet-tinged pathway.
